The historic Bowers Building is a red brick, two-story building built in the late 1800s to early 1900s just off the square in downtown Caldwell. The first floor was home to the law practice of brothers R.S. and Hays Bowers. R.S. was the first of his family to relocate to Caldwell from Tennessee in the late 1800s. He was quite a sight with his shock of red hair, strolling along clicking his gold-headed cane. He was a successful attorney and was elected Texas Senator in 1923. R.S. encouraged his brother, Hays, to attend law school at the University of Texas. Hays came in 1904 and was admitted to the Texas Bar in 1909. Shortly thereafter, the brothers became partners as Bowers and Bowers, Attorneys at Law. Though R.S. died in 1946, Hays continued to practice law in the same building for more than 50 years. In addition to his successful law practice, he served as city attorney, county attorney and was elected county judge in 1936. On some cold wintry days when condensation covers the front window of the building, an eerie thing happens: Bowers & Bowers, Attorneys at Law appears on the glass just like it looked almost 100 years ago; a reminder of another timeanother page in history. |

Originally, the second story of the building was equipped as a dental office for Drs. McNutt, Savage and Shafer. Shortly after World War II, Harry Bowers, youngest son of Hays, opened his insurance agency on the second floor. Harry was one of the towns most colorful and beloved characters. After his fathers death, he moved his business to the first floor where he worked until his death in 1987, some 38 years later. In 1992, present owners Johnny and Jeanie Price purchased the building from Harrys widow, Earlene, and restored its previous historic architecture. The Prices are the proprieters of both: |
