About Mad Hatter's

The Mad Hatters Tea Room opened in November 1998. It is located just off the Courthouse Square in Downtown Caldwell.

As you step through the door the sights and smells remind you of a by gone era and slower pace. The 1800's building wears its original pressed tin ceiling with 30 crown molding. One of the walls is exposed brick while the opposite wall holds a display of antique hats, most of which belonged to local people. An antique stove holds the pie offerings of the day made in house from 50 year old recipes. Guests have been known to stick a finger in the mile high merinque to see if the pies are real and everyone asks for the pie crust recipe. The tables are appropriately dressed in cloth, lace, and our mismatched antique chairs invite you to come sit a spell. The nostalgic charm contrasts with the wide selection of trendy gifts, home décor and clothing that peak around every corner. The unusual mix of old and new offers the perfect opportunity to connect with the past while celebrating today's gift - the present.

While the ambience is wonderful it is the food that keeps people coming back. All the menu items are named for Alice in Wonderland characters like the Punctual White Rabbit, the March Hares Madness and the Cheshire Cat's Surprise. Many of them are family favorites that have been cooked by the owner Jeanie Price for years. The chicken salad is the house specialty made with pecans, celery and a touch of curry in the dressing, many guests say that it is addictive. The quiche will be the creamiest you have ever eaten and pies taste like Grandma's.
